“We have learned over the years that the Volunteers are the thread God uses to weave people together.”
– Trailways Camp volunteer
Why Volunteer?

Volunteers are the golden thread that binds Trailways Camp. They create a safe, welcoming place where campers build friendships, try new adventures, and know they are truly valued, reminding every camper that they are something special. And their gift of time gives families and caregivers something priceless: meaningful respite and peace of mind.
Each overnight camp serves 20 campers, supported by an average of 50 to 75 volunteers. That’s what makes one-on-one support possible during the most active parts of the day, so every camper can join in every activity alongside their friends.
Ask any volunteer, and you’ll hear the same thing: “I volunteered to give, but when I left I received much more than I gave.”
There’s a Place for You
Volunteers of all ages come to Trailways Camp, including whole families. Some share their musical talents at lunch. Others bring languages, therapy pets, skills, and life experience that bring joy to everyone around them.
Flexibility is our guide. Some volunteers come for a few hours, some for half a day, some for one activity, many for a whole day, and some even stay overnight. And if you’re wondering, “What can I bring?”, you can simply come and just be a friend.
Volunteers help with fishing, canoeing, swimming, horse experiences, nature walks, arts and crafts, music, the talent show, team games, board games, meals, transportation, health and safety support, the Volunteer Center, behind-the-scenes work, and much more.
How to Volunteer
- Register online and share your activity interests.
- Camp staff will contact you to match your interests, skills, and availability with activity needs.
- Camp staff will schedule an orientation and training for you.
For everyone’s safety, all Trailways Camp staff and volunteers must pass a background screening. Volunteers who stay overnight in the camper lodge need a Level II background screening. The Camp Operations Assistant will explain how to complete your screening after receiving your registration form.
Want to Lead?
Trailways Camp also contracts Lead Camp Counselors for specific camps. Counselors lead a group of five campers to, from, and through activities, building teamwork, sportsmanship, team spirit, and inclusion. Register at the same link and note your interest in being a counselor.
